Lymphatic Massage

What is lymphatic massage (Manual Lymphatic Drainage)?

The lymphatic system is a system of organs and vessels that aid in the maintenance of fluid balance and support the immune system. The system carries lymph fluid that is filtered through the lymph nodes and contains water, proteins, fats, and cellular debris. Once it is filtered, clean lymph moves back into the body’s system and the waste is excreted by the body. When there is a blockage in the lymphatic system excess fluid builds up causing edema and fibrosis of the skin. Lymphatic massage was created to ensure that if there is a blockage, the lymphatic fluid can still move through the system efficiently. This specialized type of massage helps to reduce swelling and reduce the risk of skin fibrosis. Unlike a deep tissue massage, a lymphatic massage is a gentle massage aimed at improving circulation and assisting your lymphatic system. The massage is also excellent for those recovering from surgery.

Benefits of Lymphatic Massage Include:

How can lymphatic massage help me post-surgery?

One of the side effects of surgery is an accumulation of inflammation and fluid to the surgical site to help the healing process. Lymphatic massage helps to remove the excess fluid and waste into the lymphatic system where it can be removed by the body. It is important to drink plenty of water and get up and move around post-surgery.

Booking Recommendations:

It is recommended to wait 3-4 days after surgery before starting lymphatic massage as there is usually increased tenderness at the surgical site. In the first 2-3 weeks, it is recommended to schedule 2-3 visits per week. It is ideal to start as soon as possible post-surgery, but some patients come up to 6 months post-surgery and still see benefits.
