Therapeutic Dry Needling
What is Therapeutic Dry Needling ?
Therapeutic dry needling (TDN) is a technique used by Physical Therapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. A small, thin needle is inserted into a trigger point in the muscle, which causes the muscles to contract or twitch. This muscle contraction, as well as a chemical release that happens simultaneously, helps to improve pain and increase range of motion.
How is Dry Needling different from Acupuncture?
The only similarity between the two is that they use the same type of needle. Acupuncture is based in Eastern medicine and involves inserting the needle into specific points to assist in balancing the flow of energy (qi). Therapeutic Dry Needling is based in Western Medicine and focuses directly on trigger points within the muscle to reduce muscle tension, increase blood flow, reduce pain, and improve quality of movement.
